Race Format

We are excited to introduce an individual time trial format this season! In a time trial, riders set off on a circuit at staggered intervals in a race against the clock. The elapsed time from start to finish, plus any time penalties, is used as the rider’s total time for the event and determines placement relative to other riders in the same category.

Only one team will race at a time – boys and girls, high school and middle school together. Riders will be started at a constant interval and the order will be determined by the team’s coaches. The goal is to minimize passing and where passing occurs, for it to take place within a team that has already been practicing together.

Events will be held over two days on scheduled weekends, however entire teams will compete on a single day. On race weekend, teams will have a designated arrival time at the event site, allowing for a warm-up period, a staging time and a start time. Teams that are closest to the venue will be scheduled earlier in the day, while teams that have further to travel will race later in the day.

Course Overview

One of the largest in the Maricopa County Parks System encompassing 21,099 acres, McDowell Mountain Regional Park rates as one of the most scenic with majestic mountain views. The rolling Sonoran Desert trails at the Competitive Track at are comprised of swooping turns and short steep inclines and descents. The course travels counterclockwise and starts/finishes in the Competitive Track parking lot.

COVID-19 Restrictions

Managing social distancing guidelines and following gathering size restrictions means that much of what we enjoy and love about event weekends is simply not possible this year.

  • Masks: Evidence shows the use of masks reduces the spread of COVID-19 and the league will follow a strict face mask policy at all races. Face masks must be worn by everyone in attendance, even when an individual is able to physically distance, with the exception of student-athletes while they are competing. This is not optional. When selecting a mask, choose a mask that has two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric, completely covers your nose and mouth, and fits snugly against the side of your face and doesn’t have gaps. Do not choose a mask that has exhalation valves or vents, which allow virus particles to escape, or is intended for healthcare workers, e.g., N95 respirators.
  • Spectators: There will be no spectators on site. This includes the start and finish areas, team holding and staging areas, and on course. Only coaches are permitted to accompany racers and teams must follow an 8:2 riders to coaches ratio. Attendees waiting for racers shall remain in the parking lot and are strongly encouraged to maintain appropriate physical distancing from other attendees waiting for their riders.
  • Infield: There will be no team tents, vendor expo or merchandise sales on site.
  • Neutral Support: There will be no neutral support on site. Racers are expected to come to each race with a fully functional, race-ready bicycle.
  • Concessions: There will be no food or water on site.
  • Camping: There will be no camping in the Competitive Track lot or the Four Peaks Trailhead lot.
