[dropdown_box expand_text=”About Juli Furtado” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

Juli Furtado, or Queen Juli, is an icon in the world of mountain biking. Furtado shared a winter sports background familiar to more than a few cyclists, growing up skiing in Vermont. In 1980, she was named to the U.S. Ski Team where she competed until 1987. Furtado left skiing when knee injuries ultimately led her to transition to the bicycle as a means of rehabbing her six reconstructive knee surgeries.

After winning the U.S. National Road Racing title in 1989, Juli graduated from the University of Colorado’s Business School in 1991. She then switched her focus to mountain biking, amassing a long string of international World Cup victories and national titles. In short time she won 3 overall World Cup titles, 2 World Championships and 5 National titles. Juli’s still the only mountain biker to win both XC and Downhill world titles. In 1994, she had an amazing run of 17 first place finishes out of 18 events, only losing the last race of the season. Sports Illustrated named her as one of the top 100 women athletes in the 20th century, the only mountain biker to achieve this honor.

Furtado’s historic career took a dramatic turn during her 1996 season, which would include her participation in the Olympics. Furtado had begun feeling lethargic and her racing season was suffering and placed 10th in the Olympics. In 1997, Furtado was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, an autoimmune disease most often referred to as Lupus, ultimately ending her career.

After retiring from racing, Juli moved to northern California and enjoyed time away from mountain biking to regroup and pursue other endeavors, including a stint as a radio news announcer, interviewing homeless people, and sitting on the board of a non-profit organization helping children stricken with cancer. Twelve years ago she originated the idea for the first women’s specific bike, the Juliana (her full name), and worked with Santa Cruz Bicycles to develop the women’s market. Shortly thereafter Juli began helping Santa Cruz in their marketing and sponsorship department. Currently she is in the process of directing the production of an entire line of Juliana bikes, due to hit the market shortly.

Juli continues to live in northern California in a slightly chaotic household containing her partner Anouk, 5 year old son Wyatt, and a bunch of animals.

[dropdown_box expand_text=”About “SingleTrack High”” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

At the age of 16, many American kids trade in two wheels for four. Trusty bicycles that once gave them freedom to explore on weekends now collect dust in the garage. For a growing number of high school students, however, two wheels don’t get dusty, they get dirty. Their lives continue to revolve around weekend rides, but now those rides have a finish line. This is “SingleTrack High.”

“SingleTrack High” follows a diverse group of high school student-athletes through the 2012 mountain bike racing season in the NorCal High School Cycling League. For Eliel, high school bike racing is a competitive outlet at the highest level. For Carlos, it is a means to escape the rough neighborhoods of South Sacramento. For Mackinzie and Allie, it is a chance to break into a sport traditionally dominated by the boys. These are some of the kids of “SingleTrack High.” Through their experiences, the film explores the positive impact high school mountain biking can have on boys and girls alike, from all walks of life.

“SingleTrack High” was produced by Pedal Born Pictures, with the generous support of Specialized Bicycle Components and the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. Additional production support was provided by GoPro and Sunnyvale VW.
